Discovery Story Centre & Julia Donaldson/Axel Scheffler Exhibition
If you adore stories, throw yourself into imaginative play, and encourage a love of language and literacy with your children, then the UK’s first Story Centre is for you. With three floors of story world play, a story garden and on-going exhibitions by well-known authors and illustrators, there is enough for children of all ages to enjoy. But you really do have to go and see it for yourself to appreciate how magical this attraction is.
We were invited to the ‘Discover Story Centre, Stratford’ this weekend with the girls. I had never been but heard good things so was super excited to go. We were greeted by very friendly staff who took our booking. Straight away we spotted a huge buggy park with lockers so we didn’t have to carry everything around, always a bonus with twins!
Buggys are not allowed in the Story Centre itself so if you have a small baby, I would suggest taking a sling too. There was a well stocked shop to the left of the reception for those wishing to add to their own story collection.
The set up was explained to us and off we went… these pictures speak louder than words…
On the Ground Floor find your way through giant trees, take a trip on a special steam ship and venture in to Hootah’s Hollow.
On the First Floor, children can climb a crow’s nest to the clouds and crew the control panel on Hootah’s Observatron.
Take your adventures outside into the Story Garden where you can slide down a monster’s tongue, climb on a space craft, sail away in a pirate ship, enjoy a story in the story glade and play with giant musical instruments.
A World Inside a Book – Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler Exhibition
Wow, wow, wow – this was simply amazing. Down in the deep dark basement lie an abundant of beautiful pictures carefully drawn by the brilliant Axel Scheffler. It was a perfect introduction to the world of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The girls loved looking for different animals and spotting well loved characters before we followed the Gruffalos footsteps……
How many Julia Donaldson books can you name?
Enter the magical world of forests, miniature houses, dragons and other creatures for a fabulous trip to see your favourite Julia Donaldson Characters. Take a walk through the woods and dress up with the Gruffalo, take a trip with the Snail and the Whale, stir the witch’s caldron. Sit on Charlie Cook’s sofa and read a book or make a cup of tea in his kitchen, you name the book and it will be there!
‘Once upon a time there was a boy called Charlie Cook who curled up in a cosy chair and read his favourite book.’
And this is where it started, on a bright yellow sofa, inside Charlie Cook’s house with a storyteller who bought the tale ….. alive. Children and adults were completely entranced and loved joining in with the story but then the real magic happened…

Unfortunately, there is no parking available on the Discover site. The closest parking is in the Stratford Shopping Centre (10 mins walk) or if you click here, there are further parking suggestions. I would recommend taking a buggy with younger children for this reason. The surrounding roads are busy.
